Roland Gutierrez - Democrat (Incumbent)
Born and raised in San Antonio, Texas, Gutierrez is a 1989 graduate of Central Catholic High School. He earned his BA in Political Science from the University of Texas at San Antonio in 1995 and his Law degree from St. Mary’s University School of Law in 1998. He is the Founder and President of the Gutierrez Law Firm, specializing in immigration law.
Representative Gutierrez serves as Vice-Chairman of the House Committee on Licensing and Administrative Procedures, Government Transparency and Operations Committee and the Local and Consent Calendar Committee. Roland Gutierrez was elected to the Texas House of Representatives, District 119 in a special election in May 2008.
After four legislative sessions, Representative Gutierrez continues his efforts with helping the people of his district and ensuring a better future for themselves and their families. He is a strong champion for appropriate funding of public education, affordable public health care, effective public safety and policies to help strengthen the economic security of all Texans. Roland’s top legislative priorities have been working to ensure that Texas offers as much opportunity to our children as it did for Roland. This includes great public schools and ready access to healthcare.

In the 84th Legislative Session, Representative Gutierrez sponsored and co-authored legislation to help Texas families. He fought against many bad amendments and legislation that would hinder the hard working middle-class in our state. Gutierrez also helped secure the continuation of Hazelwood for our military families.
Representative Roland Gutierrez has seen several of his proposals become law during his previous legislative sessions. A few are the creation of an Urban Bank for the City of San Antonio, HemisFair Park and legislation to expand the scope of practice for cosmetologists.
Representative Gutierrez has worked on building new coalitions, working with all sides, and preparing for Texas’ future. “Those are the goals that form the heart of my public service – to help the ordinary people of my district shape an extraordinary future for themselves and their families”
During his tenure on the San Antonio City Council, he was a driving force behind the effort to establish Texas A&M University at San Antonio, the city’s second top-tier public university, and helped secure federal resources to fund the San Antonio River project without increasing the tax burden on middle-class families and small businesses. He was also praised for his work on City Council for his participation on the team that landed the Toyota auto manufacturing plant, leading to thousands of new jobs and millions of dollars in new economic resources for the city. In addition, Gutierrez provided the leadership in developing the first library on the south side in more than thirty-one years – the Mission Branch Library.
Roland Gutierrez frequently speaks on immigration issues and its intersection with investment and entrepreneurial ventures. Roland is the honored annual speaker for TexasOne, a program developed by the Governor of Texas which incentivizes greater entrepreneurship in Texas. Roland Gutierrez leads the employment division at the Gutierrez Law Firm. The employment division assists foreign nationals and their families with immigrant and non-immigrant work visas.
Representative Gutierrez, his wife Sarah, and their daughters Izabella and Victoria live in the Mission San Jose neighborhood, where they are members of the Mission San Jose Parish and are active in a variety of community projects
