Friends of Texas & Iron Steel

The Challenge

During the height of the 2016 presidential campaign when then-candidate Donald Trump regularly referenced our nation’s struggling steel industry and unemployed factory workers, a coalition of hard-working Texans, small business owners, and companies with large Texas footprints came together to form Friends of Texas Iron and Steel (FOTIS) to pass a “Buy America” bill at the Texas Legislature.

To achieve this end, FOTIS needed to educate Texans on the important role these industries play in our state’s economy and highlight the economic challenges faced from forces abroad and at home.

The Results

Public Blueprint’s team quickly recognized the ongoing national conversation as a “can’t-miss” opportunity to affect change in Texas state law on behalf of our client. Through a combination of unmatched relationships in the Capitol, smart utilization of state and local media, and focused digital and grassroots advocacy, a “Buy America” bill successfully made its way through the process and is now state law—an extremely difficult feat for any major policy initiative on its first run through the legislative process.
