J.D. Sheffied - Republican (Incumbent)


Dr. J.D. Sheffield is Medical Director at Coryell Medical Clinic and a physician at Coryell Memorial Hospital in Gatesville, Texas. He was elected to the Texas House of Representatives in 2012 to represent the citizens of Texas House District 59, which includes Comanche, Coryell, Erath, Hamilton, McCulloch, Mills, San Saba, and Somervell Counties. He was elected to a second term in 2014.

As the only rural physician in the Texas Legislature, Dr. Sheffield was honored to serve on the Public Health Committee during his first term in office, where he has worked to improve rural healthcare and protect the healthcare freedoms of all Texans. He has also served on the Corrections and Rules and Resolutions Committees, and was named to the Select Committee on Child Protection.

For his service in the Texas House of Representatives, Dr. Sheffield has been honored as a 'Champion for Free Enterprise' by the Texas Association of Business, was named a 'Defender of Life' by the Texas Alliance for Life, and has earned recognition from the Texas Pediatric Society, Texas Osteopathic Medical Association, Mills County Retired Teachers, and was named a 'Friend of the Texas A&M University System'.

Dr. Sheffield is a graduate of Loraine High School and Howard Payne University in Brownwood, Texas, where he served as Student Body President. After college, Dr. Sheffield earned his medical degree at the University of North Texas Health Science Center (previously the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine) and completed an internship in family medicine at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas.

He has served the medical needs of families in and around Gatesville since 1981. In recognition of his service the Gatesville Exchange Club honored him as 'Healthcare Professional of the Year'. Dr. Sheffield's community involvement has included service on the Boards of Directors of the Levita Volunteer Fire Department and the Boys and Girls Club. He is a member of Coryell Community Church in Gatesville.
